Eniola Shokunbi, a 12-year-old Nigerian fifth-grader at Commodore McDonough STEM Academy in Middletown, Connecticut, has achieved a remarkable milestone. She and her team have secured an $11.5 million grant from the Connecticut State Bond Commission to develop and implement an innovative classroom air filter system across schools in the state.
A Visionary Solution for Better Air Quality
Eniola’s air filter system is designed to neutralize 99% of airborne viruses, including COVID-19, offering an affordable and effective solution to improve classroom air quality. The device, built using everyday materials like a box fan, furnace filters, duct tape, and cardboard, costs only $60 per unit to produce—making it significantly cheaper than commercial air purifiers.
Explaining its functionality, Eniola stated:
“What it does is that the air goes through all the sides and it comes out on the top, so it filters in and out. The air filter takes out over 99 per cent of the viruses in the air and it is effective.”
Validation and Statewide Adoption
Eniola’s innovation underwent rigorous testing with the University of Connecticut and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), both of which confirmed its efficacy. Connecticut State Senator Matt Lesser praised Eniola, describing her as a “fabulous rock star” whose system outperforms many commercial products in both effectiveness and affordability.
The $11.5 million grant, part of the University of Connecticut’s Supplemental Air Filtration for Education Program (SAFE), will fund the installation of these air filters in schools across Connecticut.
A National Aspiration
Eniola’s ambition transcends state lines. She hopes to see her air filters implemented nationwide, emphasizing the role of science in safeguarding children’s health:
“A lot of people don’t realize that the only thing standing between them and getting sick is science. If we’re not investing in that, we’re not investing in kids’ future.”
A Rising Star with Big Dreams
Eniola’s journey is not just about innovation but also about leadership. With aspirations to become the President of the United States one day, she embodies the potential of young minds to shape a better future.
This groundbreaking achievement highlights the power of STEM education, innovation, and determination in solving real-world problems while inspiring the next generation of young leaders.
