Intelsat, a leading satellite services provider, has introduced its latest solution, Intelsat CellBackhaul Nigeria, aimed at transforming the connectivity landscape across Nigeria and West Africa. This fully managed cellular backhaul service is specifically designed to support mobile network operators (MNOs) and internet service providers (ISPs) in overcoming the challenges of expanding mobile coverage in the region. By leveraging Intelsat’s satellite and terrestrial network, the platform enables rapid and cost-effective expansion of mobile and broadband networks, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Addressing Africa’s Connectivity Challenges
The launch of Intelsat CellBackhaul Nigeria comes at a crucial time, as the demand for reliable mobile and internet services continues to grow across sub-Saharan Africa. According to Intelsat, the region faces significant connectivity challenges, with a 59% usage gap and 15% coverage gap. Nearly half of the 400 million people without mobile broadband access live in sub-Saharan Africa, making it one of the most underserved regions in the world.
Rhys Morgan, Regional Vice President (RVP) for EMEA at Intelsat, highlighted the need for innovative solutions to bridge this digital divide. “Satellite backhaul is often the most viable option for connecting unserved populations in rural and remote locations,” he said. “It provides a reliable, cost-effective way to extend global cellular broadband to areas where terrestrial networks either can’t reach or have become unavailable.”
Leveraging Satellite Technology for Rural Expansion
Since 2018, Intelsat has collaborated with Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) to bring satellite-based telecommunications services to rural areas across Africa. The partnership has resulted in the installation of over 3,000 rural satellite base antennas, providing new mobile services to more than 8 million people by 2023. Intelsat plans further expansion in countries such as Madagascar, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), aiming to reach even more underserved populations.
Intelsat’s new platform in Nigeria will integrate with existing systems across Africa, providing essential connectivity to millions of people via thousands of cell towers. This expansion will not only benefit individuals by enabling access to mobile and internet services but will also support essential infrastructure for businesses, emergency services, and development initiatives in hard-to-reach areas.
Overcoming Traditional Infrastructure Barriers
Traditional infrastructure deployment in rural areas of Africa has been slow and costly, often hampered by low returns on investment. These barriers have contributed to the vast digital divide that persists across the continent. Intelsat’s satellite backhaul solution, however, presents a more scalable and cost-effective alternative. The service offers high-throughput, global connectivity, which can be rapidly deployed in areas where traditional networks are either impractical or too expensive to build.
The company emphasizes that its satellite backhaul service will serve as a “lifeline” for emergency service providers and communities in need. It aims to empower mobile network operators to extend their reach, thereby promoting digital inclusion and fostering economic development across Nigeria and the broader African region.
A Milestone in African Connectivity
The launch of Intelsat CellBackhaul Nigeria represents a significant milestone in the company’s mission to improve connectivity infrastructure throughout Africa. By integrating satellite technology into Africa’s existing networks, Intelsat aims to narrow the digital gap and enhance access to mobile broadband services for millions of people. The company’s collaboration with local and regional operators underscores its commitment to driving growth and innovation in the continent’s telecommunications industry.
As the demand for mobile broadband continues to rise, especially in rural and remote areas, Intelsat’s satellite backhaul service offers a promising solution to extend the benefits of the digital economy to more people across Africa. Through strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technology, Intelsat is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in the continent’s journey toward full digital inclusion.
