Aya Data, a Ghana-based artificial intelligence startup specializing in data collection and annotation, has raised $900,000 in a seed funding round. This new injection of capital, a mix of debt and equity, will be used to scale two of its key AI-driven products—AyaGrow and AyaSpeech—and to expand its team by hiring new talent. This latest funding brings Aya Data’s total raised to $1.15 million, following a previous round that secured $255,000 from investors like Microtraction, Savannah Fund, and Scott Bell. The recent round was led by 54Collective, with participation from other angel investors.
AI Products for Agriculture and Language Solutions
Launched in 2021 by co-founders Freddie Monk and Ama Larbi-Siaw, Aya Data provides data collection and annotation services, including the labeling of images, videos, and text required for training large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Aya Data also focuses on building custom AI solutions for businesses, and its product offerings include AyaGrow, an AI-driven crop and field monitoring solution for precision agriculture, and AyaSpeech, a speech-to-speech translation tool that supports local African languages for businesses, consumers, and governments.
Scaling Expertise and Innovation in AI
Aya Data aims to foster local expertise in Africa’s AI landscape by employing and training individuals for technical roles such as data annotation, engineering, and data science. These roles are crucial for the accurate collection and labeling of vast datasets, which are foundational for the development of LLMs. Global tech giants like Meta and OpenAI outsource data labeling to firms in developing economies, and Aya Data is positioned to capitalize on this demand. It competes with similar companies, such as Shaip, Sama, iMerit, and Cloudfactory, all of which contribute to the development of AI systems globally.
Aya Data sets itself apart by managing the entire data annotation process within Ghana, allowing it to deliver faster and more efficiently without relying on third-party vendors. According to Gillian Hammah, Aya Data’s Marketing and Strategy Officer, “Because we control everything in Ghana, we can deliver faster and more efficiently without the risk of involving third parties.”
Financial Growth and Client Base
In 2023, Aya Data generated $500,000 in revenue and now serves about 20 active clients, including notable names like MIT, Seedtag, Unilever, Labelbox, and Nvidia. While much of the company’s work has been with international clients, it is increasingly focused on helping African businesses leverage AI to boost their competitiveness.
Expanding Workforce and Vision for AI in Africa
Looking ahead, Aya Data plans to train 1,000 data annotators, engineers, and scientists in the coming months, expanding its technical capabilities and improving its in-house AI products. Co-founder and COO Ama Larbi-Siaw emphasized the startup’s mission to address Africa’s challenges through AI, stating, “We are dedicated to building local expertise that can leverage AI to tackle the continent’s most pressing challenges.”
Ultimately, Aya Data is working to ensure that Ghana and similar markets can build world-class AI technology while enabling businesses and individuals to benefit from artificial intelligence as quickly as possible.
