Apple Adds ChatGPT to iPhones in AI-Powered iOS Update
Apple has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its devices, a move aimed at enhancing user experience and boosting sales of its latest iPhones. The update, part of a broader push towards artificial intelligence, introduces AI-powered tools across iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
Key Features
- Writing Tools: ChatGPT can create written content in compatible apps.
- Image Generation: Users can generate images using the chatbot within the new system.
- Siri Enhancements: Siri now interacts with messages, emails, calendars, and third-party apps, capable of crafting emails and adjusting tone for specific contexts.
These AI capabilities are accessible on the latest iPhone series, Pro and Pro Max versions of the iPhone 15, iPads with A17 Pro or M1 chips and later, and Macs with M1 chips and newer.

Privacy Focus with Private Cloud Compute
Apple has emphasized privacy in its AI integration. Its Private Cloud Compute service processes complex tasks on Apple servers while ensuring security. The in-house chips used in data centers are designed with enhanced privacy protections, offering a distinct contrast to enterprise-focused approaches by rivals.
Apple executive Craig Federighi stated:
“We hope these features will show our 1 billion users the potential of AI while maintaining the highest standards of privacy and security.”
The Race for Smartphone Leadership
While Apple remains heavily reliant on iPhone sales, it secured second place in global smartphone sales with a 3.5% YoY growth in Q3 2024, according to IDC data.
- Demand Drivers: Promotions around Apple Intelligence and strong sales of older models like the iPhone 15 have fueled growth.
- Holiday Outlook: Many customers are expected to upgrade from earlier iPhone models to AI-enabled devices.
Despite this progress, Samsung retains market leadership with an 18.3% market share. Samsung’s Galaxy AI features, coupled with the launch of foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, have strengthened its premium segment dominance.
Outlook for Apple’s AI Push
While the integration of ChatGPT and AI tools marks a pivotal shift for Apple, analysts remain cautious about short-term sales boosts.
Nabila Popal, IDC research director, remarked:
“The staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence outside the U.S. will likely limit immediate gains, but the holiday season should drive further adoption.”
As Apple continues to innovate and leverage AI for its ecosystem, its long-term success will depend on customer reception and the effectiveness of its privacy-centric approach.
