Apple’s upcoming AirPods might include built-in cameras, but not the type you’re thinking of. While it may seem unusual for a device primarily designed for audio, there’s a good reason for this: enhancing spatial experiences.
Infrared Cameras for Spatial Audio
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to mass-produce AirPods with infrared (IR) camera modules by 2026. These cameras, similar to the Face ID technology on the iPhone, would likely be produced by major Apple supplier Foxconn.
These IR cameras could detect environmental image changes, enabling new spatial audio experiences. For example, a user watching a video with Vision Pro and AirPods could have the sound source from a specific direction emphasized when they turn their head, enhancing the overall experience.
Emphasis on Spatial Audio
Apple places significant emphasis on spatial audio in its audio products and services, including Apple Music. With the addition of IR cameras to AirPods, Apple could achieve more precise head movement tracking, leading to richer audio experiences. It’s still unclear if these new features will be exclusive to the use of AirPods with Vision Pro or if they will extend to pure audio listening as well.
New Features with iOS 18
Even without the IR cameras, Apple plans to introduce new features to AirPods with iOS 18. These features include new head gestures, such as nodding or shaking your head to answer or decline a call. Additionally, Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking will be available for gaming for users with the latest AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max. These features will become widely available this fall when iOS 18 is released.
