Former MTN Group CEO and Eskom Board Member Sifiso Dabengwa Passes Away After Battle with Cancer
The telecommunications industry and South Africa have lost a key figure, Sifiso Dabengwa, the former MTN Group CEO and Eskom board member, who has passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. The sad news was confirmed by his family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, who expressed the family’s deep sorrow in a statement.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa, who succumbed to cancer this morning. Dabengwa was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman,” Sibanyoni shared.
A Distinguished Career in Telecommunications and Business
Dabengwa’s remarkable career was marked by his leadership in the telecommunications sector, where he made significant contributions. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA, which provided the foundation for his outstanding professional journey.
Sifiso Dabengwa is survived by his wife, Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, who is the Chief Executive of Naspers South Africa, and their four children. His legacy is perhaps best known through his role as the CEO and President of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015, where he succeeded Phuthuma Nhleko on March 31, 2011. His leadership during this period left a lasting impact on the company and the industry at large.
Leadership at MTN and Beyond
Before taking the helm as MTN’s CEO, Dabengwa served as the Group Chief Operating Officer, playing a crucial role in the company’s expansion and operational success. His journey with MTN began in 1999 when he joined as the Managing Director of the South African operations. His competence and vision led to his promotion in 2004 to the dual role of Chief Operating Officer and CEO of MTN Nigeria, the group’s largest and most lucrative market.
Upon returning to South Africa, Dabengwa worked closely with his predecessor, Phuthuma Nhleko, to develop and implement MTN’s growth strategy. His tenure as CEO was characterized by visionary leadership, integrity, and a dedication that spurred significant advancements in the telecommunications sector.
“His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry,” the family’s statement noted. “He was an advocate for education and a fervent believer in the power of technology to transform lives.”
The Challenges and Legacy
Despite his successful career, Dabengwa’s tenure at MTN was not without challenges. His departure from the company, which MTN described as a resignation, came in the wake of a massive $5.2 billion fine imposed by Nigerian regulators. The fine was a result of MTN Nigeria’s alleged failure to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered SIM cards, an issue that became one of the most significant challenges of Dabengwa’s leadership. At the time, MTN was engaged in ongoing discussions with Nigerian authorities to resolve the matter.
Dabengwa’s career also saw him contribute to the energy sector. He was appointed as a director at Eskom, South Africa’s public electricity utility, on January 19, 2018. He served in this capacity until July 21, 2020, when he tendered his resignation.
A Lasting Impact
Sifiso Dabengwa’s passing marks the end of a career that not only shaped the trajectory of MTN Group but also left a profound impact on the broader telecommunications industry. His advocacy for education and belief in technology as a transformative force continues to resonate. He will be remembered as a visionary leader who navigated both triumphs and challenges with unwavering commitment and integrity.
