The launch of OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o “omni” model in May has significantly boosted ChatGPT’s app revenue, marking the chatbot’s most lucrative month in July. According to data from Appfigures, the app generated $28 million in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play, an increase attributed to the release of GPT-4o.
Impressive Revenue Growth
Net revenue, which is the amount OpenAI retains after paying in-app purchase fees to Apple and Google, reflects the growing popularity of the mobile app. In July, the app reached its highest revenue point, with 83% of the total coming from Apple’s App Store—a figure that has seen a 20% increase since June.
The gross revenue figures before app store fees are also telling. In May, ChatGPT’s app grossed $28.9 million, $34 million in June, and a notable $39.9 million in July, showcasing the app’s steady upward trajectory.
GPT-4o: A Game-Changer for ChatGPT
The introduction of GPT-4o brought several advanced features to ChatGPT, significantly enhancing the user experience. The model introduced the ability to handle text, speech, and video, offering faster response times and the ability to be interrupted, which made interactions feel more human-like and natural. These innovations drove a 40% increase in revenue in May, a growth that, while slightly slower now, continues at a robust pace.
Surge in Paying Subscribers
July also saw the app reaching a new milestone, with Appfigures estimating the addition of 2 million new paying subscribers. This growth is likely to continue with the introduction of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, which enables nearly real-time and highly realistic voice interactions.
Outlook for Continued Growth
As OpenAI continues to refine and expand the capabilities of GPT-4o, the app’s revenue is expected to keep climbing. The ongoing enhancements in voice interaction and the consistent increase in new subscribers position ChatGPT for continued success in the months ahead.
