Meta has launched the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, offering up to $2 million USD in funding to support innovative use cases of its open-source AI, Llama 3.1, to tackle critical global challenges. This initiative continues Meta’s commitment to leveraging AI for social good and builds on the success of previous grant programs.

- Funding: The program will provide up to $500,000 USD per selected organization.
- Total Funding: Up to $2 million USD.
- Application Window: August 5, 2024, to November 22, 2024.
- Focus Areas: Economic development, science and innovation, public service, and other social challenges.
- Events: Regional events including virtual events, in-person hackathons, workshops, and training sessions in multiple regions including Sub-Saharan Africa, North America, Latin America, and others.
Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkiye, highlighted the program’s potential to empower organizations and drive meaningful change through AI:

Support for Applicants
Meta will host various regional events to provide technical guidance and mentorship, helping applicants develop impactful applications of Llama 3.1 in local contexts. Organizations participating in these events may also be eligible for additional specialized awards of up to $100,000 USD.
Previous Grant Programs
The inaugural Llama Impact Grants, announced in October 2023, saw over 800 applications from more than 90 countries. The 20 finalists have submitted their final proposals, with recipients to be announced in September 2024, alongside the Llama Impact Innovation Awards.
