Saudi Arabia’s Mobily and Egypt’s Telecom Egypt have entered an agreement to build the first undersea cable directly connecting Saudi Arabia and Egypt. This groundbreaking infrastructure will span the Red Sea, providing a crucial link between the two nations and offering extended connectivity to Europe through multiple routes.
Owned entirely by Mobily, the new subsea cable is expected to strengthen the company’s international cable network, which aims to enhance reliability and meet rising demands for internet connectivity. The system will connect at landing stations in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and Duba, Saudi Arabia, forming a direct link across the Red Sea. Mobily notes that this project supports its long-term goals of expanding its network reach and reinforcing its digital infrastructure in line with the growing global demand.
The cable will also integrate with Egypt’s subsea networks, connecting to other major systems landing in Egypt, which acts as a gateway to Europe and the rest of the world. Mobily’s CEO, Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Badran, emphasized that the new cable aligns with the company’s strategic vision to enhance both regional and global capabilities, fostering communication between the Middle East and Europe.
Telecom Egypt’s CEO, Mohamed Nasr, sees the collaboration as a significant enhancement in the partnership between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He expressed confidence that this agreement would support the rising demand for data capacity and connectivity, benefiting critical sectors and providing the infrastructure needed for robust, reliable internet services in the region.
This cable project represents a critical step in Mobily and Telecom Egypt’s joint ambitions to establish the Middle East as a connectivity hub, linking Asia, the Arabian Gulf, Africa, and Europe through advanced telecommunication corridors.
