MTN Foundation Invests Over N2 Billion in Science Education Across Nigeria

MTN Foundation has made a significant investment in renovating and equipping science laboratories in secondary schools across Nigeria, allocating over N2 billion to the initiative. This effort has benefited 102 science laboratories across 32 secondary schools in 15 states as part of the foundation’s long-standing commitment to improving science education in public institutions.

Gombe State Receives Newly Equipped Science Labs

On Tuesday, the foundation commissioned a new set of seven renovated and equipped science laboratories at Government Day Science Secondary School in Gombe State. During the ceremony, Mohammed Kabir Ahmed, a director at MTN, represented by Ali Yaya Ahmed, highlighted that this was the third phase of the foundation’s Science and Technology Laboratory Project (MTNF STLP). The initiative is aimed at upgrading the standard of science education in Nigeria, reflecting MTN’s corporate social responsibility objectives.

As part of this phase, six public secondary schools across the country, including the Gombe-based school, have had their science laboratories completely refurbished. This includes two laboratories each for physics, chemistry, and biology, along with an agricultural science lab.

Modern Facilities and Digital Learning Tools

The renovated laboratories have been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including alternative power solutions to ensure uninterrupted learning. To enhance the overall teaching experience, the foundation has also provided digital learning tools such as laptops, projectors, and screens to make the study of science more engaging and accessible for students.

Enhancing Practical Science Education

The newly equipped laboratories aim to boost practical science education and foster a stronger interest in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, and agricultural science. By providing students with hands-on opportunities to engage in science experiments and practical applications, the MTN Foundation seeks to cultivate the next generation of scientists and engineers in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the Gombe State government, Abdullahi Usman Garkuwa, the state’s Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, lauded MTN for the initiative. He noted that the project would greatly enhance science practicals and experiments in schools. Garkuwa also shared the state government’s vision of introducing space and rocket sciences into its educational curriculum, marking an exciting future for science education in the region.

MTN Foundation’s Broader Impact

The MTN Foundation has consistently invested in education and technological advancement in Nigeria, and the Science and Technology Laboratory Project is just one example of its nationwide impact. Over the last three years, the foundation’s commitment to upgrading science laboratories in public schools has helped bridge the gap in science education and provided students with modern learning environments.

With this ongoing investment, the foundation is not only transforming classrooms but also empowering future generations with the tools they need to succeed in the fields of science and technology.
