In a complex business landscape riddled with economic difficulties and consumer complaints, MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecommunications provider, has achieved a remarkable feat. According to Ookla’s latest Speedtest Intelligence data report, MTN Nigeria has been crowned as the network with the fastest download and upload speeds in West and Central Africa. Despite facing significant operational hurdles, the company’s 5G network has propelled it ahead of regional competitors, reaffirming its dominance in the sector.

MTN Nigeria’s 5G Network: Driving Speed Leadership

The Ookla report, which analyzed mobile performance across five of MTN’s nine markets in West and Central Africa from Q2 2022 to Q2 2024, revealed that MTN Nigeria outpaced its subsidiaries in download and upload speeds.

  • Download Speed: MTN Nigeria recorded an impressive 95.62 Mbit/s, attributed largely to its 5G rollout. This figure placed it well ahead of MTN Ghana, its closest competitor.
  • Upload Speed: With a median upload speed of 17.01 Mbit/s, MTN Nigeria also outperformed other subsidiaries, including Ghana (16.74 Mbit/s).

These metrics underline MTN Nigeria’s commitment to delivering high-speed internet, even as other subsidiaries also showed notable improvements during the review period.

The report praised both MTN Nigeria and MTN Ghana for their outstanding growth in download and upload speeds, noting that they were the most improved subsidiaries over the last two years. Interestingly, MTN Ghana achieved its high performance without a fully deployed 5G network, highlighting the effectiveness of its existing infrastructure.

The findings also highlighted that other subsidiaries, such as MTN Benin and MTN Cameroon, made significant strides in improving download speeds between 2023 and 2024, although Nigeria remained the standout performer.

Challenges Amid Success: The Paradox of MTN Nigeria

Economic Hurdles and Financial Losses

MTN Nigeria’s achievements in speed and network performance are juxtaposed against an increasingly difficult economic environment. The company recorded a staggering ₦514 billion loss in the first nine months of 2024, primarily due to Forex challenges.

CEO MTN Nigeria – Karl Toriola

During a media tour of MTN’s facilities, CEO Karl Toriola painted a grim picture of the telecom giant’s financial position, warning of potential shutdowns if tariffs on voice and data services are not adjusted.

“There should be no delusion; if the tariff doesn’t go up, we will shut down,” Toriola stated, emphasizing the urgency of policy changes to ensure the survival of the telecom industry.

Consumer Complaints and Investigations

Ironically, MTN Nigeria’s accolades for speed come amidst widespread consumer dissatisfaction. Subscribers have raised concerns over poor internet service, leading to an investigation by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Complaints range from slow internet speeds to frequent disruptions, leaving many customers unable to carry out essential online activities.

This disconnect between network performance metrics and consumer experience has fueled public frustration, casting a shadow over MTN Nigeria’s achievements.

The Role of 5G in MTN’s Strategy

Since the launch of its 5G network in September 2022, MTN Nigeria has strategically expanded its coverage to seven major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maiduguri. The deployment of 5G technology has been instrumental in achieving the high-speed benchmarks reported by Ookla.

5G offers ultra-low latency, higher bandwidth, and faster speeds, enabling MTN Nigeria to stay ahead of competitors in West and Central Africa. However, the adoption of 5G also brings challenges, such as higher operational costs and the need for substantial infrastructure investment.

Looking Forward: Opportunities and Risks

Spectrum Acquisition for Future Growth

MTN Nigeria recently received approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for the purchase of a 2.6GHz spectrum, signaling its commitment to enhancing network capacity and quality. This move is expected to further strengthen its competitive edge, particularly in urban areas where demand for high-speed internet is rapidly growing.

Consumer Trust and Service Quality

While MTN Nigeria leads in speed, it must address the growing concerns of its customer base to sustain its market dominance. Investing in improved service delivery and transparent communication with consumers will be critical in bridging the gap between technical performance and user satisfaction.

Conclusion: Resilience in a Challenging Market

MTN Nigeria’s ability to triple its median download speeds within two years, as highlighted in Ookla’s report, is a testament to its resilience and strategic focus. However, the company’s journey is far from smooth. Financial losses, regulatory challenges, and consumer complaints remain significant obstacles that could impact its long-term sustainability.

As MTN Nigeria navigates these complexities, its leadership in speed underscores the potential of innovative technology like 5G to transform connectivity in Nigeria. Balancing technical excellence with customer satisfaction will be key to securing its position as a telecom giant in the years to come.
