Mukuru Launches New Mobile Wallet in Malawi to Boost Financial Inclusion and Money Transfers

The Mukuru Wallet represents a critical step in Mukuru's broader strategy to modernize financial services and drive digital transformation in Malawi

Mukuru, a leading financial technology company headquartered in South Africa, has officially launched its new mobile wallet in Malawi. The wallet, named the Mukuru Wallet, is designed to enhance international money transfers and improve financial access for the country’s citizens. This development aligns with Mukuru’s mission to drive financial inclusion and provide digital financial solutions for underserved populations in Malawi.

Mukuru Wallet: A Game Changer for Malawi’s Financial Landscape

The Mukuru Wallet aims to address the growing demand for a convenient, secure, and efficient way to manage funds, send and receive money, and store value. This is particularly significant for the largely cash-dependent population in Malawi, who are increasingly trusting digital financial solutions. According to Mukuru’s Malawi Country Manager, Pride Chiwaya, the launch was driven by a growing demand for money transfer services and a need to build trust among users.

“Mukuru is committed to driving financial inclusion, and this wallet builds on the trust we’ve established with our orange booth and branch network. We’re becoming a preferred partner for businesses in Malawi seeking secure and efficient payment solutions,” said Chiwaya.

The wallet is equipped with two pockets:

  • Nyanja: Dedicated to domestic transactions and cash-ins.
  • Moyo: Designed to facilitate international money transfers.

A notable feature is that customers are not charged fees when cashing out from the Moyo pocket, making it a cost-effective solution for users managing international remittances.

Mukuru’s Commitment to Financial Inclusion

Founded in 2004 by Rob Burrell, Mukuru has grown into one of Southern Africa’s leading next-generation financial services platforms, serving over 16 million customers across Africa, Asia, and Europe. With more than 100 million transactions processed and operations in over 60 countries, Mukuru is dedicated to addressing the broader financial needs of underserved communities.

As mobile wallets gain popularity across the African continent, they have become essential financial tools for unbanked populations, offering a safe and effective way to access financial services. The Reserve Bank of Malawi’s National Payment Systems report for 2022 highlighted a 14.1% increase in mobile money subscribers, reaching 12.2 million users. The Mukuru Wallet taps into this growing demand and provides an alternative means of accessing formal banking services in both rural and urban areas.

Key Features of the Mukuru Wallet

The Mukuru Wallet allows users to:

  • Seamlessly send and receive money both locally and internationally.
  • Store, save, and earn interest on funds deposited into the wallet.
  • Pay bills directly from the wallet, reducing the risk associated with carrying large sums of cash.

According to Mike Cook, Mukuru’s Head of Wallet and Card, the wallet offers a safe, digital means of storing funds and helps Malawians actively engage with the digital economy. Cook emphasized that customers can also earn quarterly interest on their wallet balances, further incentivizing them to transition from cash to digital money.

“This is financial inclusion – providing people with a platform to be part of the modern, digital economy,” said Cook.

Paving the Way for Digital Transformation in Malawi

The Mukuru Wallet represents a critical step in Mukuru’s broader strategy to modernize financial services and drive digital transformation in Malawi. By promoting digital tools and enhancing user experience, Mukuru is helping to create a more efficient, inclusive financial ecosystem in the country.

Mukuru’s services are accessible through a wide range of channels, including WhatsApp, USSD, mobile apps, websites, contact centers, and a robust network of branches, agents, and orange booths. This flexibility ensures that both digital-savvy users and those more comfortable with traditional methods can benefit from Mukuru’s services.

As Mukuru continues to innovate and expand its reach across Africa, its new mobile wallet is poised to significantly boost financial inclusion and empower more Malawians to participate in the global economy.
