In a bid to address the growing menace of criminal activity along major highways, Nigeria is considering installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on key roadways. This initiative is aimed at reducing incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and violent attacks that have made highways dangerous for travelers across the country.
Highway criminality has been a persistent challenge in Nigeria, with armed gangs, kidnapping syndicates, and bandits terrorizing citizens along major roads. The government hopes that the implementation of advanced surveillance technology will help authorities prevent and respond more effectively to these crimes.

David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, unveiled the government’s plans during the formation of a committee tasked with developing a cashless tolling system for the Abuja-Keffi Expressway and the dualization of the Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi road. While the e-tolling system aims to create a more sustainable transportation framework, the integration of CCTV cameras is seen as a critical measure to enhance security on the highways.
“Part of the committee’s assignment will be to explore how we can install CCTV cameras and ensure solar-powered lighting along the entire route of the project,” said Umahi. The installation of these surveillance systems is expected to bolster crime prevention efforts and provide real-time monitoring of high-risk areas.
Real-Time Monitoring for Improved Security
In addition to the CCTV cameras, the government plans to set up monitoring stations where officers can observe highway footage in real time. These surveillance hubs will allow for quick responses to criminal activities, enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement in curbing highway crimes.
